SBOC welcomes you to take part in a series of coaching sessions to improve your orienteering skills.

Love Adventure, Love to explore as a family, Love the outdoors and keeping fit. Here is your chance to learn how to Orienteer.

Swansea Bay Orienteering Club is offering you and your family the chance to attend 4 Coaching sessions in March and April.
With a qualified Coach and help from friendly Club members you will learn all the basic techniques you will need to be able to Orienteer.
From map reading, using the compass, understanding contours and navigation we hope you will be able to explore the parks and woods around Swansea safely and with increased enjoyment.

The course is comprised four sessions and the cost for all 4 is only £20.00 per person, but accompanied children are free. This will cover your insurance, equipment and map costs.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and those have done some basic courses before and are just starting out. Come and gain new skills and confidence.

Times 10.30 to 13.30..meet 15 minutes before hand Fees £20.00 per adult for all four sessions, accompanied children free. Or £5.00 per session per adult.

Benefits – mental and physical exercise. Leading to gaining navigation skills suitable for Duke of Edinburgh, Mountain and Trail races, and competent orienteer to enjoy the sport around Swansea.

Session 1 - Saturday March 23rd - Pembrey Country park

Where to go?

Enter the Pembrey Country Park (post code SA16 0EJ) main entrance (there is a £2.00 fee) and follow the red and white orienteering direction signs. The sessions will take be based from the 'Woodland Car Park'.

Timings

We will start at around 10.30 am so please try and get there for 10.15 to deal with the registration. We intend to finish around 13.30 to allow for plenty of time to practice and enjoy the sport. You have the rest of the day to enjoy the rest that Pembrey has to offer.

What will happen?

There will be an Orienteering Coach, who will run a series of sessions to learn about orienteering and how to do it. There will be fun exercises planned for various ability levels for all the family to take part in. And Swansea Bay club members will be on hand to help.

What to bring?

Clothing suitable for running or walking.

Warm clothing for pre and post exercises.

Waterproofs.

Compass.

Whistle.

Pack lunch/snacks and hot and cold drinks.

(The club has a small number of spare compasses and whistles for loan if you do not have your own).

The club tent will be available to store bags and clothing away from the elements. Toilets and a cafe are located about 400m from the car park.


Session 2 - Saturday April 6th - Pembrey Country park

Where to go?

Enter the Pembrey Country Park (post code SA16 0EJ) main entrance (there is a £2.00 fee) and follow the red and white orienteering direction signs. The sessions will be based from Carpark 6 near Cefn Sidan Beach.

Timings

We will start at around 10.30 am so please try and get there for 10.15 to deal with the registration. We intend to finish around 13.30 to allow for plenty of time to practice and enjoy the sport. You have the rest of the day to enjoy the rest that Pembrey has to offer.

What will happen?

There will be an Orienteering Coach, who will run a series of sessions to learn about orienteering and how to do it. There will be fun exercises planned for various ability levels for all the family to take part in. Swansea Bay club members will be on hand to help. This session will cover the range of navigation techniques to make it easy to find your way from point to point including map simplification and map memory exercises.

What to bring?

Clothing suitable for running or walking.

Warm clothing for pre and post exercises.

Waterproofs.

Compass.

Whistle.

Pack lunch/snacks and hot and cold drinks.

Session 3 - Saturday 13th April - Clyne Valley Country Park

Where to go?

Please park at Clyne Play area car park on Ynys Newydd Road, follow signposts towards the Household Waste Recycling Centre (off DerwenFawr Road). Post Code SA2 8DU.

Timings

We will start at around 10.30 am so please try and get there for 10.15 to deal with the registration. We intend to finish around 13.30 to allow for plenty of time to practice and enjoy the sport.

What will happen?

There will be an Orienteering Coach, who will run a series of sessions to learn about orienteering and how to do it. There will be fun exercises planned for various ability levels for all the family to take part in. Swansea Bay club members will be on hand to help. This session will focus on route choice and developing techniques such as use of attack points and catching features. We will end with a short competitive event with easy and hard options.

What to bring?

Clothing suitable for running or walking (the terrain could include some steep and muddy slopes so footwear with grip would be handy).

Warm clothing for pre and post exercises.

Waterproofs.

Compass.

Whistle.

Pack lunch/snacks and hot and cold drinks.

(The club has a small number of spare compasses and whistles for loan if you do not have your own).

The club tent will be available to store bags and clothing away from the elements.


Session 4 - Saturday 27th April - Clyne Gardens.[NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE]

Where to go?

Please park at Clyne Gardens Car park, next to the Woodman Pub Car Park. Mumbles Road, Swansea. Post Code SA3 5AS.

Timings

We will start at around 10.30 am so please try and get there for 10.15 to deal with the registration. We intend to finish around 13.30 to allow for plenty of time to practice and enjoy the sport.

What will happen?

There will be an Orienteering Coach, who will run a series of sessions to learn about orienteering and how to do it. There will be fun exercises planned for various ability levels for all the family to take part in. Swansea Bay club members will be on hand to help. This session will focus on Competition tactics and will include use of electronic timing. We will end with a short competitive event with easy and hard options.

Afterwards

We will aim to finish in time to allow for a refreshment in the Woodman Pub Garden, where the Welsh Junior Squad coach will be able to tell you about what opportunities there are for the youngsters. Also we will collect the information needed to process the FREE Membership to the club for those who have been to the sessions and want to join. We also hope to provide a medal for the youngsters who have been tothe events. So we hope this will be a great way to end the series and warm you up for the summer league ahead.
