Three members of SBOC chose the warmer climate of Portugal to kick off the 2018 orienteering season.
Portugal O meeting or “POM” is the biggest annual Orienteering event in Portugal. Being at the beginning of the international season, it's a chance for the world's best orienteers test whether their winter training has paid off!
4 Days, 5 Events!
This year the events were staged a 90 minute drive East from Lisbon starting with an urban race around the walled City of Evora.
Margaret stormed around the cobbled streets and finished in 4th, beating all of her rivals from Bristol Orienteering Klubb (BOK).

The rest of the races were all held on the same forested area, the super fast rocky terrain of S. Bartolomeu do Outeiro.
Ben’s top performance of the week was in the middle race: “After running 20km the day before in the Long race I had the terrain figured out and today was all about running fast and running straight!”

Below is a video from Day 3 of the event.

If 4 races wasn’t enough there was the option to run a night sprint around the village of Portel on Day 3. Niall had a good run finishing 28th but was just pipped by BOK’s Mark Saunders.

Niall's (M55) course

It was a fantastic 4 days with beautiful sunshine, technical orienteering and a great atmosphere. If you fancy taking part next year, the event will be held North of Lisbon in the coastal forested sand dunes near Figueira da Foz on the first weekend of March.
