SBOC hosted two days of orienteering last weekend, in the technical sand dunes of Oxwich and Kenfig. Competitors from far and wide arrived to run on these fantastic areas, enjoying the brilliantly planned courses provided by Dave and Ben Mitchell.

Saturday’s event forming part of the club’s summer league, was blessed with sunshine and there was a lovely social atmosphere as competitors compared courses, routes and caught up with friends from near and far. It is great to see newcomers, the Price Family, enjoying their first attempt at orienteering and to see Jenny Matthews and Charlie Brilliant enjoying the Light Green. On the Green course Freddie Lake M14 had a great run coming in 4th with Anne Mitchell W45, having a storming run to come in 5th place just behind him.

Sunday’s event, part of the Welsh League, was a bit damper than the day before, but thankfully the forecasted deluge stayed away. The courses planned by Ben Mitchell and controlled by Mike Forrest provided complex navigation with very few path runs on the longer courses, contour reading and close attention to vegetation changes was very much needed. It was fantastic to see new SBOC member Ruth Dye attend her first big event and take on such a challenging area. On the Short Green, Diana McClure (W65) came in 4th and was most grateful to Jill Manning who lent her a cap to keep the rain off her glasses – always easier when you can a) see the map and b) see where you are going. William Lake (M14) had a brilliant run coming in 2nd on the Green, with Freddie Lake (M14) coming in 8th and Niall Reynolds (M55) had a fabulous run to come in 2nd on the Blue, with Steve Jones (M60) coming in 6th.

I have heard nothing but praise for the areas, course and organisation of the events, and must thank everyone involved in making both days such a success. Results from both days are available here.

Next Event - Wednesday 12th June, Clyne Gardens, Swansea. Details.
