Bright sunshine greeted over 60 runners to Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, at the top of the Swansea Valley for the 5th event in the Winter League. It was also doubling up as the 2021 Club Championships. With extra courses planned by Chris Lewis a good number of runners were tempted across from Bristol and beyond to tackle the tough but beautiful limestone area. its southern slopes of linear crags, tussock grass and stony ground meant for hard physical running but competitors were rewarded with spectacular views across to Cribarth, Fan Gyhirych and the ridge of Fan Hir. The return run, over short grazed grass, called for careful navigation whilst descending at speed amongst the many contour features and rocky outcrops. The Orange course was very much a family affair with Emily Peltor beating her two brothers. On the Light Green Course, Mark Ponsford from Cardiff beat Robin Irwin of SBOC and Debbie Manning also from Cardiff. On the Green Course, Duncan Innes was first, Malcolm Lyon second and Roger Stein from SBOC third. The blue course saw James Clemence take first place, with Niall Reynolds (SBOC) second and Ivor Powell (Bristol) third. On the 9km Brown course Ben Mitchell (SBOC) finished first in an impressive 64.31 minutes, with Rhys Manning (SWOC) in second 12 minutes behind and Duncan Birtwhistle (OD) in 3rd place. Full results are Here. Thanks very much to all the organising team under the leadership of Kerina Lake for a great event.
The Club Championship winners will be confirmed once the handicap system and course lengths are taken into account. The trophies will be presented after the Clubs winter league 7 at Port Eynon.
