Ben and Megan repeated last year’s double gold medals at the British Middle Distances championships by both winning their men’s and women's elite courses at this year’s British Long Distance Championships in the Lake District. Grizedale Forest provided a tough test of both navigation and fitness with courses requiring runners to pass through dark and rocky forests with often poor visibility. Ben completed his 12km course in 99 mins just 40 seconds ahead of 2nd position. Megan took the women's title with a convincing 7 minute gap to 2nd, thus cementing her position as Britain's no 1 female Orienteer.
In the M16A Robin Irwin powered his way onto the podium too, finishing in 2nd place with an excellent run.
Well done to all the other SBOC runners who all completed their courses as many runners abandoned their courses as the going was so tough.
On the Sunday we had two teams competing in the British Relay Championships held at Bigland Estate. Megan, Robin and Ben took on the Men’s premier class and finished in an excellent 5th place.
We also fielded a mixed adhoc team with Club Captain Bethan Irwin, Kate O Sullivan and Niall Reynolds achieving a well deserved third place. Gary Waters joined another mixed adhoc team so getting the chance to take part.
A great but tough weekend of Orienteering and some amazing performances by club members.
