A small group of club members made the long trip to North Yorkshire for the British Championships. With the individual day on the Saturday and the British Relays on the Sunday it was sure to be a great weekend. The junior men again performed really well on the Individual day, with Robin Irwin taking 4th place in his first year as an M16 and he’s still only 14. On the M18 Elite and M20 elite Freddie and William Lake respectively both finished 8th. Also finishing 8th on a super competitive W45 was club captain Bethan Irwin. Also, we should mention Gary Waters who competed in M75 in his first British Championships after only taking up the sport last Summer. An amazing progression from a Yellow Standard to the British Championships!
Then the highlight of the weekend from a club point of view came in the Relays. Using the British Orienteering Neighbouring Cubs alliance framework, designed to give small club juniors a competitive run we teamed up with a junior man from Bristol. In a very close Under 18’s relay competition, the boys progressed, from 3rd on first leg, to 2nd on 2nd leg and up to first on the last leg with Freddie Lake bringing the team home after overhauling the South Yorkshire runner. Amazing performance form our small but super talented bunch of juniors.
Fingers crossed for more success at the next major event, the British Middle Distance Championships near Leeds.
